While searching through Correspondence and Record Cards in
the Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot (NAID: 636288), one of our researchers
found this 1914 advertisement for chocolate candies. According to a letter sent
by the confectionery manufacturer Hawley & Hoops, the Philadelphia
Quartermaster Depot was in the market for cocoa and confectionery. In their
correspondence, Hawley & Hoops enclosed advertisement materials, one of
which is featured here. Although this advertisement is over 100 years old, many
of the chocolates look like candy we might buy today.
Hawley & Hoops
offered chocolates in familiar shapes such as chicks, rabbits, and other
animals.
It is also interesting to note some of the not-so-familiar chocolate shapes,
such as possums, pistols, and jack knives.

feel free to woo me with possum shaped chocolates.
This is an excellent idea! I’m sorry I keep missing these, I had no clue!
@jokerteeth Don’t worry about it, I gave short notice both times. I’m still sort of figuring out my schedule, but once I do I’ll give about a week of advanced notice. The next mystery hour will probably be Friday at the earliest, but probably next week to be honest. I’ll keep you posted!
I worked with toddlers and pre schoolers for three years. Sometimes I accidentally slip and tell a friend to say bye to an inanimate object (“say bye bus!”) & occasionally they unthinkingly just do it.
I’m glad there’s a teacher version of “accidentally called teacher ‘mom’”
i know people love the fake-married-but-then-fall-in-love trop but they always do it for weird reasons and i never see the most obvious reason which is to commit tax fraud.
SO excited to announce my new original comic “Walnuts!” It’s going to run in newspapers all over the world! I can’t wait to introduce you to characters like Gnarly Brown and his dog Scoopy, Sinus and Juicy, and of course Spearmint Peggy!
